One of the most striking characteristics of the ancient and multi-faceted Hindu religious tradition is the importance of goddess worship. The worship of female deities has existed in many ancient cultures. Joseph Campbell links the image of the Earth or Mother Goddess to symbols of fertility and reproduction.
